Saint Patrick’s Day is March 17th, a day when we celebrate the luck of the Irish by wearing green and consuming Irish beverages and foods. Unfortunately, though, carrying a good luck charm or wearing your lucky underwear is no guarantee against colon cancer. The only surefire way to prevent the disease is to take action, which is why having a colonoscopy is so important.
Probably because of my red hair and freckles, I have always been obsessed with “all things Irish.” As a child, I remember looking for four-leaf clovers for hours at a time as well as several vain attempts of finding the ubiquitous leprechaun with his pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. I had high hopes of attaining the luck of the Irish because I wanted good luck. (more…)

Today is March 8, 2012, which means it’s the first annual National Colon Cancer Screening Day. StopColonCancerNow.com’s goal is to encouraged 1,000 first-timers to either have their colonoscopy or schedule their colonoscopy today, and I am one of those first-timers.
I am a 40-something-year-old woman whose parents both had polyps found in their early 50s when they went for their initial colon cancer screening. The discovery of polyps in their 50s means that I need to get my colon cancer screening in my 40s. So I sucked it up and made the call TODAY on National Colon Cancer Screening Day. I have people who love me and I want to be there for them for a LONG time. (more…)

As I write this post, more than 60 physicians, researchers, colon cancer survivors, caregivers and other advocates are joining together on Capitol Hill for the 6th Annual Call-on Congress, hosted by Fight Colorectal Cancer. These volunteers are meeting face-to-face with their members of Congress to share their stories and urge support for colon cancer funding. (more…)
