Alternative Holiday Mock Cocktails: Avoid triggering Acid RefluxThe holidays are right around the corner and, let’s face it, with all of the shopping, cooking, cleaning and entertaining, most of us could probably go for a caffeinated drink or cocktail or three. Even before Halloween, stores are stocking their shelves with Christmas decorations, which can be stressful all in itself. But for those suffering from acid reflux, this can be a challenge because unfortunately alcohol and caffeine can be triggers for acid reflux.

Reflux is caused by the backup of stomach acids into the esophagus, the tube that connects the mouth and the stomach. Your stomach produces strong acids and enzymes, which are used in food digestion. The lining of the esophagus does not have mechanisms to protect itself from the effect of the stomach acids that cause irritation.

So this month’s post will be focused on designing some seasonal reflux-friendly mock cocktails, or “mocktails”, that are great for serving the entire family and a nice alternative for party guests who prefer not to drink.

Pear Bellini

  • 1 oz pear nectar
  • 1/2 oz ginger infused simple syrup (simply combine fresh ginger, 1 part water, 1 part
  • sugar, simmer on stovetop and cool)
  • top with your favorite sparking water or sparkling grape juice
  • garnish with a thin slice of pear

Sparkling Ruby Apple Cider

  • sugared rim of glass
  • splash of cranberry juice
  • 4 oz of sparkling apple cider
  • garnish with fresh orange twist and cinnamon stick

Ginger Beer Fizz

  • 1 oz apricot nectar
  • 1/2 teaspoon honey
  • top with a good quality ginger beer
  • garnish with crystallized ginger or fresh cranberries

When preparing for your next event, keep in mind that the quality of ingredients, the garnishes and even the glass you serve your drinks in can all add to the occasion. Enjoy!
